Desire Paths
Whilst walking the British coast & countryside with my little Flossie, I notice two main types of path: a bridleway/trail and a desire path.
The first path has been deliberately made and often laid with the clear intention of getting you from A to B. Not only is it intended to make the journey easier but it also acts as a guide, a route for you to follow.
The second path is usually narrower, easier to miss, made by animals and humans tramping through with a need to be somewhere different, to take a shortcut or explore, forging their own way, – these are called desire paths.
In yoga, your teacher has made and laid a deliberate path for the class, but they want you to be curious and follow your own desire paths. To circle back, to take shortcuts, to find what you need even if that means coming to a stop.
So next time you are in class, remember you have the choice of path, pace and direction.
On the map of your yoga some things are clearly drawn and some things are less obvious.
Find your path and make it your own in a way that is sustainable for both you and your personal environment.
