Have you heard of the Tibetan Five Rites? I once had a private Dru yoga teacher who taught me them. They are considered to be an ancient practice with relevance for today’s busy world. Let’s look at what these rites are all about and how they might benefit us in our everyday lives.
The Tibetan Five Rites are a set of five simple exercises that have thought to have been practiced for centuries in the Himalayan region. While they might sound mystical, their essence is quite practical and down-to-earth. These rites are designed to promote physical strength, flexibility, and mental clarity – things we can all appreciate in our modern, hectic lives.
So what do these rites entail? Think of them as a series of movements that most people can do, from gentle stretching to strengthening, each rite targets different areas of the body and could leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated.
For example, the first rite involves a simple spinning motion to wake up your body and get your blood flowing. Then there are exercises to strengthen your legs, stretch your back, and improve your balance and movement potential. They are believed to be about finding balance and harmony within yourself whilst moving the body and are completely unstudied and unproven but a simple way to remember five different ways to move daily. I was taught to master 7 of each exercise, building over time to a maximum of 21 of each inline with its roots and of course you can modify speed, intensity and find a more accessible version for your needs.
.Taking a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with yourself through movement and mindfulness is never a bad idea and who knows? You might just discover a newfound sense of well-being and vitality that stays with you long after you’ve finished The Rites.
