Here is a great pocket sized handy yoga class planning hack and yoga teacher tip:
MY ADDITION SUBTRACTION METHOD
We often feel we need to be endlessly creative in our class planning but sometimes life takes over or we are just generally tanking too much time into planning.
* This tip isnt for sustainable planning but it may just help you out when you are in a pinch or give you a week or two a month of less planning… sound good?
Take a class plan that you JUST taught this week. (Now in every class we learn something teaching it so make those little tweaks if needed)
1 Choose to add or subtract something the same in every pose ie in triangle you could add a palm on the navel or subtract the arms, fingers to shoulders instead.
2 Then every pose in your plan could add the same palm to navel or subtract the arms similarly.
This opportunity allows revisiting a familar sequence but finding new sensations, curiosity and rethinking without extra effort, strain or time. Could it even be a vehicle for making an existing plan more accessible? What else could you add/ subtract that want physical, a pause, a reconnect?
For you this method could create great leading questions such as: ‘where is the navel facing now under your palm’ or ‘does the weight in the front foot feel different when we remove the arms from the pose?’
So whether you are adding or subtracting, as a teacher you GAIN.
Which one are you going to try? Adding or subtracting?
