Savasana. Yes its the whole point but we have more information now than when we trained so lets look at what we know.
For every person who feels it is their highlight of the yoga class, there will be somebody that is deeply uncomfortable with it.
Whether it’s mental health, ADHD, neurodiversity, trauma, stress or many other reasons, I think we have to look at if our purpose is to help individuals it isn’t to force them to take relaxation at the end of class and to educate around accepting our differences rather than forcing everybody into a standard experience. We wouldn’t force everybody into a headstand or a squat and I think some of the same approach is required.
So making it an option is a good start and tailoring it to the style of class can work but recognising a commercial class and some employers also have requirements too.
What length savasana do you use as a rule of thumb? Ive always chatted to teachers I’ve worked with about a 10% so 6 mins ish on a 60min class etc but it always divides opinion.
Id say rather than the regimented shape of savasana how else can we dial the NS down? Are we hinging it all on that one moment or are we laying foundations leading up to it as well so if savasana is a bust theres still some strides made in the right direction?
Finally, flip the mirror to yourself – how attached are you to savasana? Its length, its readings/music/silence etc – and why?
